- Hymn was written after a tragic event in Horatio Spafford’s life: Detained by business, he sent his wife and family to cross the Atlantic to Europe by ship, planning to join them later. That ship collided with a sea vessel and sank causing all four of his daughters to perish at sea. He was inspired to write his hymn when traveling to reunite with his wife, his ship passed near where his daughters died.
